Esophagus


Objectives

  • Normal: Describe the type of epithelium that lines the normal esophagus.

  • Reflux: Identify the histologic changes associated with reflux.

  • Eosinophilic esophagitis: Know the minimal number of eosinophils seen in the biopsy of the mid- or proximal- esophagus of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis.

  • Infectious esophagitis: Name the three most common causes of infectious esophagitis.

  • Barrett: Define Barrett esophagus.

  • Neoplastic (Adenocarcinoma, SCC): Distinguish adenocarcinoma from squamous cell carcinoma.
