Course Description

Welcome to the Surgical Pathology Laboratory, colloquially referred to as the gross room! The gross room is where the macroscopic examination of tissue is performed, so that the subsequent microscopic examination can begin. In addition to this, the gross room is generally where frozen sections are performed, which will help guide the surgeon in their procedure. The purpose of this course is to give a general overview of how the gross room functions, explain how some of the instruments are used, and most importantly, provide an introduction to grossing and gross pathology. By the end of this course, we hope you will leave with a better understanding of the gross room, and for those of you daring to join a pathology residency program, we hope this course will give you a bit of confidence as you transition over into your new role in Pathology.
